A PhD in psychology, Prof. Safin has a wide range of experience in teaching and research work from his years with the SBU (2002–2005), the Ukrainian Border Patrol (1993–2002), and the Soviet Armed Forces (1983–1992). He is a member of the psychology review board of Ukraine’s Higher Accreditation Commission. Prof. Safin has published 78 research papers on various aspects of the psychology of working in restricted environments, motivation and professional development, and management work.

Areas of Research:

• setting up and functioning policy analysis groups in central executive bodies
• anti-drug policy and policy to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS
